The origins of Village Service Trust extend back to the 1970s. Inspired by the example of Dora Scarlett volunteers from the UK and India formed organisations to support the work of her rural clinic, Seva Nilayam (Home of Service). Seva Nilayam’s leprosy centre was relaunched as Arogya Agam by John Dalton, Vasandham was started as an outpost of Seva Nilayam by Gunasekaran, and Village Service Trust was formed in the UK to help fund this work. Their current focus is on working with community organisations of poor women, Dalits, indigenous people, HIV positive people, transgendered and sex workers.

Following Schumacher’s ‘small is beautiful’ aim to create an economics ‘as if people mattered’ this Society envisions a just and sustainable global economy; believes in applying the concepts locally; then sharing the results for broad replication. Citizens working for the common interest can build systems to achieve such an economy. Money issue can be democratized, ownership should be more diversified and labor should have a part in the ownership structure. They favor the face-to-face relationships fostered in local economies and focus on transformative systems and the principles that guide them.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is a global animal rights organization that focuses attention on the areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in the food industry, in the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry. They are also concerned with cruelty to domesticated animals and to those considered to be pests.

L214 for Ethics & Animals is a French association (similar to PETA) focusing on how animals used in food production are bred, managed, transported, and slaughtered. It mainly campaigns to raise awareness of bad practices and take action against them. They show the negative impact of the consumption of animal products (terrestrial or aquatic) and propose alternatives. They seek the cessation of animal consumption and other practices that harm non-human species. The L214 refers to a section of the French Law of 1976 which states: « Every animal being a sentient creature must be placed by its owner in conditions compatible with the biological imperatives of its kind.”

The Animal Protection Agency (APA) is a UK organisation committed to ceasing the trade in wildlife for pets. Perhaps unbelievably, it is still legal in Britain to sell wild animals captured from other countries. The majority of wild-trapped animals die from the stress and disease that is associated with every stage of their harrowing journey. Next to habitat destruction, collection of animals for the pet trade is the main reason for the decline in many species.
